Kids Crochet @The Mermaid Art Studio

Back by popular demand- crochet class for kids! Beginners and all other levels welcome. Come be inspired! Learn new stitches or work with non-traditional materials such as PLARN (plastic yarn made from upcycled plastic bags) or wire. Stitch up one of our famous Squid Scarves, a pom pom headband, texting mittens or create your own design. Endless possibilities!

All materials included; if you have a crochet needle or yarn, feel free to bring it with you.

Drop in knitting and crochet at The Mermaid Art Studio

Bring your WIP (work in progress), a cup of tea, and spend a little time chatting and stitching in the company of like-minded fiber folks. If you need a refresher on how to cast on, bind off, or the difference between a HDC and DC, come on by. Now is a great time to start your holiday projects!

Sun Oct 20 – Jones Beach Fall Wildlife Festival

Shop Beach Girls Purls at lovely and historic Jones Beach this Sunday, October 20!

We’re joining a bevy of other local green/organic/handmade artisans at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center for a day of fun and education.

Eco-friendly art, food, animals and activites for the whole family. 11am-4pm.

Learn to Knit and Crochet at The Mermaid Art Studio

mermaidartstudiologo2aAnnouncing the launch of The Mermaid Art Studio in Long Beach’s West End! Starting Monday Sept. 23, we’ll be open for business with classes and workshops for kids, teens and adults in painting, drawing, mixed media, knitting, crochet, bookbinding, upcycled projects and more!

For all the folks who’ve asked about lessons or general help with a pattern, this is the place! We’re planning group classes as well as one-on-one sessions, and eventually drop-in sessions (probably in the winter) where you can come hang with like-minded fiber fans.

Stop on by, say hi, we’ll be in front of City Hall with the Farmers Market from 10am-4pm.  Check out our cool cotton summer shrugs, hats, throw rugs, yarn and more, for sale online and in person. We’ll have some new markdowns and sale items, too.

The Mermaids Are Coming To The West End of Long Beach

emptystudiofrontLong Beach artists Denise Collins and Laura Bykowski, founders of the original Mermaid Art Studio, plan to relocate to a new home in the heart of the West End as part of Long Beach’s post-Sandy recovery. Bruised but not broken…rebuilding Long Beach one paint stroke at a time!

The Mermaid Art Studio will be a community-focused Center for the Arts.  The studio will offer after-school classes for elementary school aged children, tweens and teens, in addition to adult classes and workshops in Printmaking, Book Binding, Painting, Drawing, Fiber Arts, Weaving, Recycled Art, Papier-mâché, and much more.

mermaidsdeniselauraOpen studio hours will be offered during the day as well as on Fridays for Teen Night. Birthday Parties, Ladies Nights and First Friday events are part of the studio’s programs.

Sept 29, 2012- Support Rescue Ink & Adopt a Dog or Cat

Did you know Rescue Ink runs Long Beach’s no kill animal shelter? Do you need a furry friend in your life? Come down to the Long Beach Farmers Market/Arts in the Plaza on Sat Sept 29 for Rescue Ink’s Adopt-A-Thon! Cats and dogs are waiting for their forever homes.

Anyone adopting a dog or cat from this event on Sept 29 can come by the Beach Girls Purls booth and pick out a felted pet collar, feathery cat toy or knitted squeaky poop for FREE (while supplies last). We love the animals!

You can also make a financial contribution or donate a needed item.

Raindate- Aug 19 – Forgotten Friends fundraiser

Because of the rain today, this event will be held on Sun Aug 19.

Join us at Garden of Eve Organic Farm on Sun Aug 19! Shop Beach Girls Purls and other local artisans  & craftsmen and you will be raising money to help puppies and kitties in shelters find their forever homes.

Fun for the family: food, music, belly dancing, raffles and pet adoptions.

Happy Birthday Sandisfield!

Join us in celebrating the 250th anniversary of Sandisfield, MA.

Stop by our booth at the country fair on July 28 & 29. There’ll be crafts, food, music and more, including a historical militia reenactment, a cemetery walking tour and old fashioned fun for the kids, like sack races and a pie eating contest. Or you can hike the Clam River with the Berkshires Natural Resources Council.
